Gender roles and society.

Gender Roles and society.
Today in society women and men are "created equal" but as we all know that hasn't always been the case. Women used to be seen differently than men, they were viewed as lesser than men. For example of functionalism women used to only do stay at home jobs and men would go out and work. Some work places wouldn't hire women because the are women and the jobs they wanted were jobs of men. This was influenced by the media in adds and TV shows showing all the women doing is cooking and cleaning and not going out and having a job. This demonstrates Symbolic interactions.
However now days women do jobs that used to be qualified as "man jobs" such as being a police officer, or a fire fighter, or a doctor. Women now have the opportunity to do much more with their life's than clean and cook and serve their family all day. This is good for our society because now there are a lot more occupied jobs than before, it shows that women can do everything men can do. A update example of functionalism would be how easy it is to get into college for women as well as men now, and to be able to study the same majors as each other equally . this shows how far society has come today from years ago when women weren't aloud to attend college. A symbolic view on this would be how commercials show women and men doing jobs of the same status like both being dentists or Brain surgeons. another is how colleges advertise to both men and women in their commercials. This also shows that women and men are both getting about the same equal opportunities in life to excel now. women are not just house wives but have the opportunity to more on in life as well. "Women are still not always seen as equal as men, but its evolving and getting there" (J. miller 2011) our society functions with women in today's economy, our society needs more than just men to function now. this is because our economy is rising and women now want and need to be able to provide for themselves.
