Norms and Sanctions

A cultural norm is a practice we take part in on a daily basis. It is a conscious or subconscious act which reflects the expectation of the culture we are a part of. An example could be taking you hat off at the dinner table, or wearing black at a funeral. These are not required however there will be some sort of sanction if they are not followed. In the case of wearing a hat at dinner you may simply be asked to take your hat off. If you were to wear a neon green pimp suit to a conservative Christian funeral, you may be asked to leave. Oxfords dictionary defines a norm as “a standard or pattern, especially of social behavior, that is typical or expected.”(2012). While simple sounding noticing norms which are ingrained in ones culture can be difficult or impossible to notice without viewing it through the lens of another culture.
